Hi guys--it's a new week again and I've got a brand new Ask Kyle blog entry for you, this time centering on a relationship question. This one comes from Amblin who wishes for his location to remain private. Here's his original email:

I've been with my partner for over five years, and we fully intend to spend the rest of our lives together. Our state prohibits gay marriage but we've chosen to stay here to be close to friends and family--until we have marriage equality here, it looks like Manny and I won't be saying those vows. Nonetheless, we feel that we are married at heart. We have that close of a relationship. We've lived together for almost four years. And we talk about adopting kids all the time, though I'm not sure how soon we'll materialize those plans. The question right now is this...

"We handle all our finances together--or more accurately I handle both of ours--but up to now we have maintained separate bank accounts. Lately it's really been getting to me. I wish we could combine our accounts into one joint account like married couples do. While I'm great at keeping the bills paid, I don't know that much about the legal side of things. There's some exciting news that came out of Boston yesterday. It looks like the state of Massachusetts may start to extend gay marriage to couples from other states that would not recognize their marriages. Legislation will be taken up Tuesday in the state Senate and soon after in the state House to attempt to repeal the 1913 law that has been used to prevent this up to now. The bad news? The vote is expected to be a close one, with the opposition to the repeal being very strong. Many still expect the new law to pass because of strong support from certain leading lawmakers including Gov. Deval Patrick.

The law specifically says that marriages in that state will not be granted to those whose marriages would be illegal in the states in which they live. The law was created back when interracial marriage was for the most part only legal in Massachusetts. The law was then irrelevant until the ban on gay marriage was lifted in 2003. Now it's preventing gay couples all over the United States from going to Massachusetts to get married.

As you know, California recently lifted their ban on gay marriage. They do not have a law against couples from other states marrying in theirs. New York state legally has to recognize marriages performed elsewhere, as cited in the recent case of a lesbian couple from Buffalo who married in Ontario in 2006 and were recently denied health insurance. They are currently suing Blue Cross.

Some feel that the new law in Massachusetts would be an important piece of the puzzle in compete equality.
